Darlington, SC - DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - A teenager drowned at the Darlington City Swimming Pool and another swimmer was hospitalized on the pool's opening day, according to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee.

Justin McKay, 13, was pronounced dead around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at an area hospital.

Hardee said the boy was swimming at the pool on Gary Street around 3 p.m. when the senior lifeguard decided to evacuate the pool because of inclement weather. Once the pool was empty, staff members noticed two people on the bottom of the pool.

Hardee said lifeguards began rescue attempts and the two swimmers were transported to an area hospital.

The Darlington County Coroner's Office has requested an investigation from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Darlington County Sheriff's Office as a matter of standard procedure, Hardee said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday in Newberry.
