Dillon, SC - DILLON, SC (WMBF) – Businesses along Interstate 95 in the Pee Dee hope the first major travel weekend of the summer brings them a lot of business.
Workers at South of the Border in Dillon have been busy getting ready for the summer season, which they say officially gets underway Friday with the Memorial Day weekend.
Millions of travelers stop at South of the Border each year and this year, the public relations director says they have new merchandise and attractions.
"Lots of people make us a destination," Susanne Pelt with South of the Border said. "We have family reunions and that sort of thing and everything gets real busy and crazy and we love it. People do stop here on their way to the beach, lots of times they spend the night here and finish on the next day."
South of the Border is about halfway between Miami and New York, which Pelt says gives people a good place to stop and relax.
Barbara Harriott stopped at South of the Border on Thursday and says she enjoys stopping each time she travels to Georgia.
"It's always good to stop, you know, and see everything especially at night it's all lit up here," Harriott said.
Economic leaders say there has been major growth in Florence County because of Interstate 95 and people stopping to spend the night in hotels or eating in restaurants.
