Boaters reminded to be aware of surroundings

Myrtle Beach, SC - NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF)  - A boating accident on Friday that sent one person to the hospital serves as a reminder of the importance of boating safety this season.

"There are a lot of things you have to be aware of out there," said Cpl. Ronnie Floyd of the SC Department of Natural Resources. "Cars are more linear but when you're on a boat it's a 360 degree issue."

DNR offered safety tips during a boat safety seminar at the Freedom Boat Club in North Myrtle Beach.

"I've been stuck in thunderstorms so you really have to watch the weather," said boat captain Charlie Toutant.

The seminar featured safety demonstrations, free food, and free advice from DNR officers, who reminded boaters the importance of life jackets and properly maintaining all safety equipment onboard any vessel.

On Friday, DNR said one person suffered facial injuries after a boating accident near the Pitch Landing in Horry County. As of last update, those injuries are non-life threatening.
