Atlantic Beach, SC - ATLANTIC BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Atlantic Beach town police gathered with nearly 100 volunteers to help clean up the area on Saturday.
"Cleanliness is always invited so hopefully this will be the first start to bring visitors back to Atlantic Beach," said town resident John Sketers.
He isn't the only one hoping more people show up to the area. North Myrtle Beach resident Anne Broody says pitching in to help clean up is important.
"We are their closest neighbors," she said. "We stick together and help each other."
Atlantic Beach Town Manager William Booker says the day was about having some fun while improving the community.
"Any time that your town is improved and looking good it makes a great difference in how people perceive it," he said. "More importantly how we think about it ourselves, those of us that live here."
John Sketers says while the clean-up is a step in the right direction, and he hopes to get more trash cans placed throughout the city.
"If people come to a clean city they are more apt to put trash in the receptacle," he said.
As for Broody, she has high hopes for her neighbor: "I've never spend much time in here," she said. "I've driven through here over the years, but it's a beautiful beach and with a little love attention and care it will become the black pearl again."
