Driver spots black bear in Conway

Conway, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - Police were busy Friday morning with an unusual sight in Conway - a black bear.

A driver called Conway Police around 3:40 a.m. Friday saying he saw a black bear in the Conway Ford car lot near Highway 378 and US-501.

Officers chased the bear around Seventh and Smith streets on the east side of Conway as the animal took towards downtown.

"They said they were handling a situation with a black bear," explained James Brown, who stopped to ask directions from an officer. "I said, 'A black bear!?' He said, 'Yeah, right up the street here. Come to find out it was a black bear running around here in Conway. Right here in the city limits. It was amazing. Unbelievable, actually. First time I've ever seen anything like this, this close."

Conway Police called for assistance from the SC Department of Natural Resources, but were unable to capture it.
