From Francis Marion University
FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University senior Dilshod Sharifi has been named the 2010 recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Player to Watch award for NCAA Division II. The award is one of six national awards recently announced by the ITA.
Sharifi, a native of Dushanbe, Tajikistan, was 15-1 in singles play this past season and is ranked second in Division II among singles players. He was 8-1 in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference, 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents, and owns a 54-4 career singles mark. He was ranked first in the nation for several weeks during the 2010 season.
In doubles play, Sharifi was 12-8 and is ranked seventh nationally.
The 13th-ranked Patriot men ended the season 12-8 and made their 14th NCAA National Tournament appearance in the past 16 years.
Last month, Sharifi was named first-team All-Conference in singles and second-team in doubles.
Sharifi recently earned a B.A. degree in international studies. He plans to work at Saddlebrook International Tennis in Florida, and with one semester of eligibility remaining, he could possibly return to FMU as a graduate student next spring.
In 2009, FMU's Oshada Wijemanne was named the ITA Player to Watch for the Southeast Region.
