Florence County, SC - FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The discovery of more than 30 game fowls and injectable stimulants in Florence County has led authorities to arrest two people on cockfighting charges.
Capt. Michael Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said Diosimar Ochoa, 25, and Eustacio G. Mendiola, 41, both of Scranton, were in possession of more than 30 fowl that were engaged in combat and wearing artificial items.
Throughout the course of the investigation, deputies learned the two suspects were using injectable stimulants to enhance the strength and aggressiveness of the birds.
South Carolina law states possession of game fowl with artificial items and stimulate substances as a misdemeanor offense. Both Ochoa and Mendiola have been charged with cockfighting and illegal game fowl testing.
Should both suspects be convicted, Nunn said they could face up to a $1,000 fine or one year in jail.
