MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Myrtle Beach is getting some national exposure through a new USA Today feature article on the top five bargain destinations for this summer.
The author of the article used trends and sales patterns to decide which locations made the list; and Myrtle Beach is sitting in good company with California, Quebec City, the Bahamas, and Ireland.
"Anytime you reach a national publication in USA Today it reaches millions of people and with a message of affordability and value it's a great message at the right time," said Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Dean. "We're constantly seeking out positive coverage for the destination both by courting freelancers out of market but also by bringing them here."
Dean says most of the chamber's marketing efforts center around paid advertising to a targeted audience. But he says free media exposure like this is often more powerful.
"Over the course of the year we'll meet with hundreds of travel writers and reporters trying to persuade them to cover the Myrtle Beach area," said Dean. "This is one example of where that pays off with big dividends."
Heather Chandler, a first time visitor to the Grand Strand from just outside of Cleveland, says affordable prices and family activities are what caught her eye.
"I'm an online searcher and I searched and searched," said Chandler. "I have two small children, Chase he's two and I have a four year old too, and we just wanted a vacation that we could all take together."
