Hartsville Police clear suspect in Howard Street shooting

Hartsville, SC - HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - A suspect arrested by Hartsville Police in connection to an early Monday morning shooting along Howard Street has been released from custody.

Hartsville Police Chief Tim Kemp said James Byrd was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday and charged with assault and battery with intent to kill in connection to the incident.

Police were called to the home in the 400 block of Howard Street around 5:30 a.m. Monday after a person walked to an address on Sumter Street with a gunshot wound. Kemp said a 22-year-old was shot in the shoulder.

Kemp said following further investigation and questioning, Byrd's alibi checked out and was cleared as a suspect in the case.

Investigators, according to officials, are now revisiting the victim and witnesses to the shooting to help generate new leads.
