11th annual fishing tourney set for Memorial Day weekend

North Myrtle Beach, SC - NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The 11th annual Dixie Chicken Funament, a fundraising fishing tournament, is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at Harbourgate Marina in North Myrtle Beach.

The Dixie Chicken Funament, sponsored by Damon's Grill, North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce CVB, Marine Service Center of Little River Inc. and Sparks Toyota, is an annual mixed species fishing tournament and fundraiser that attracts fisherman from all over the U.S. The two-day tournament features several other events including the Seventh Annual Flounder Frenzie sponsored by the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Entry fees for the Dixie Chicken Funament are $100 for the Inshore Division, $200 for the Offshore Division, and $40 for the Flounder Frenzie. The event features nearly $50,000 in cash and prizes. Proceeds from the Funament benefit the PA-01 Jim Caudle Artificial Reef Foundation which supports the expansion and development of the PA-01 Jim Caudle Artificial Reef.

There are currently 45 reefs in South Carolina, which contribute over $83 million to the State's economic impact and employ over 1,000 individuals. In 2003, when the Reef project began, the Jim Caudle Artificial Reef was the least visited in the State of South Carolina. Since its start in 2000, the Dixie Chicken Funament has made the Jim Caudle Reef the largest and most visited artificial reef in South Carolina. The reef, located a short distance off the Little River Inlet, is easily accessible to all fishermen, and was a favorite spot of Jim Caudle, an avid fisherman who lost his life in early 2000.
