North Myrtle Beach, SC - NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Members of the North Myrtle Beach City Council are expected to meet in executive session Wednesday to review the progress made on a search for a new city manager.
John Smithson, who serves as the current city manager, abruptly announced his retirement in February after serving in the seaside community for 30 years.
"The decision to continue with my planned retirement has not been easy," Smithson said in an official statement. "Although it has truly been an honor to have been able tos pend a majority of my career with this amazing city, I am looking forward to spending more time with my wife and watching my children grow and prosper."
Smithson had anticipated making his retirement known in January, but withheld the announcement as an investigation surrounding the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety Department unfolded.
The city manager retiterates his decision to step down from his post is in no way related to a series of events that have brought controversy to the city since the beginning of the year.
Officials say Smithson's exact retirement date will coincide with the search of a new manager.
