Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A zoning ordinance permitting family fun parks to set up shop in Horry County has passed its third and final reading at an Horry County Council meeting Tuesday night.
Members of the Horry County Council unanimously passed the ordinance, following a language change that classifies carnivals as family fun parks. The change of wording came as a precaution to keep other carnival-type events from popping up across the county.
The issue came to light following a proposal by the Myrtle Beach Mall to host a three-month event in a section of the facility's parking lot. However, the land the proposed family fun park would occupy must be rezoned to meet county requirements.
A shopping mall must now be present with paved parking, in addition to a minimum of 50 acres of land on highway-commercial zoned property, to hold a special event lasting longer than a week.
County leaders say a request for a special events permit would not apply in this case because it is not an event that is seven days in length, or shorter.
Residents present at the Tuesday night meeting say they're pleased with the new ordinance after voicing noise violation concerns at previous meetings. Council has been assured by event organizers that security will be tight, and campers and temporary homes will not be allowed near the family fun park.
Organizers hope to kick off the 12-week event on June 11.
