Myrtle Beach, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A 29-year-old has pleaded guilty Tuesday in connection to a 2008 burglary and boating accident that led to the death of a 13-year-old boy on the Intracoastal Waterway.
Horry County Deputy Solicitor Elizabeth Tilley said Nicholas Macklen pleaded guilty in an Horry County courtroom to five separate charges for his role in a burglary and boating accident that ultimately killed Shayne Odermatt, 13.
Investigators with the Horry County Police Department were dispatched to a home along Folly Road on Aug. 30, 2008 in connection to a burglary. Before police arrived on scene, the suspects involved fled the scene of the crime by boat and traveled south along the Intracoastal Waterway.
While investigators responded to the home burglary, dispatch received a call that two boats had collided on the Intracoastal Waterway, in an area near the Highway 544 overpass.
Odermatt was killed and three others were seriously injured when Macklen's boat crashed into their waterskiing boat.
Following his arrest, Macklen was charged with first degree burglary, leaving the scene of an accident involving death, and three counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury. Three others, including Brandon Scott McDevitt, Amber Walker and Elizabeth Parness, were also arrested in connection to the incident.
