CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – After months of crunching numbers and debating where to make cuts, the Horry County School Board voted unanimously to approve the preliminary budget for 2010-11 on Monday night.
But with an estimated $17 million in additional cuts expected for FY 2011-12, school board chairman Will Garland warns the district is not out of the woods yet.
"What we have to do is plan for year 2011-2012 not only this year, because we know we're losing $13 million in federal money next year and it won't be back," said Garland.
Garland says without any stimulus money next year, and even less money from the state, the school district is going to have to make up for a huge shortfall.
"There's discussions about cutbacks in our fine arts programs, in our athletic programs," Garland explained. "Basically the easiest way of saying it is everything is on the table."
He says while these talks are still in the early stages, considering this year's budget still has to go through a final vote in June, he also says these talks are necessary.
