Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF)- The Myrtle Beach Boardwalk officially opened on Saturday. The ribbon-cutting ceremony included the National Shag dance team dancing to, appropriately, "Under the Boardwalk."
Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Dean says this is a huge day for Myrtle Beach. " It's not just the opening of the boardwalk but the resurgence of the downtown, of the iconic Myrtle Beach," he said.
Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes says the completion of the boardwalk is just the first step to bring tourists in.
"The Chamber has already got an ad campaign going, DRC [downtown redevelopment corporation] has a campaign going, Oceanfront Merchants Association has a lot of scheduled events that are here this summer," he said. "So it's going to be very exciting, don't miss it."
Leaders aren't the only ones excited about the boardwalk. Grand Strand businesses are also joining in on the celebration.
"It's crazy- I can't give you any numbers but it's going through the roof," said Russ Stalvey. Stalvey is the owner of Ocean Front Bar & Grill, which sits right on the new boardwalk.
He expects businesses to only get busier as the season goes on."It's only the beginning," he said. "We haven't even gotten to summertime yet."
Dean agrees, "The great thing is this boardwalk that created jobs during the down season and is now bringing tourists during the peak season it's a great thing for Myrtle Beach in 2010."
