LITTLE RIVER, SC (WMBF) – A Little River gym is the proud home of a national champion.
Wilmington's Ellen Marion, who trains at Gymnastics & More in Little River, won the National Championship in the floor exercise event at this past weekend's Level 10 Junior Olympics National Championships in Dallas, TX.
Marion also won third place overall in a competition that featured some of the top high school gymnastics talent in the country. Marion, a Hoggard High School student, hadn't been to that prestigious a competition before.
"Between normal competitions and that competition, there was a big difference," said Marion. "More people, more intense. There were college coaches all lined up. I worked hard before the event [and] came to this gym recently. I just hit all four events so I placed well."
Marion performed well in many events, but her floor exercise was the best, earning her the championship. Marion made it through her 90 second routine basically without any errors, which gave her a great feeling once her performance was over.
"It's definitely a relief, like all my hard work paid off," Marion said. It's very exciting. Then I'm hoping for a good score!"
Marion will compete for the North Carolina State University gymnastics team starting next year.
