Myrtle Beach, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - More than 1,500 people have signed up for a three-year event expected to draw upwards of 6,000 runners and walkers into the streets of Myrtle Beach in October.
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Continental Events and Sports Management Group LLC to bring the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon to the Grand Strand. The inaugural event will be held Oct. 22-24, 2010.
The marathon is expected to return in 2011 and 2012, as well.
Officials announced Thursday the 13.1-mile marathon will begin on Harbor Lights Drive in front of Myrtle Beach's Medieval Times. The race was originally slated to begin at Freestyle Music Park.
Actors at Medieval Times will be joining the thousands of runners to kick-off the event in a historic fashion. The king is expected to address the crowds and proclaim that the winners, male and female, will be knighted at the award ceremony.
According to a press release from the MBACC, the weekend activities will include a two-day health and fitness expo, a coastal 5K race, one-mile doggie dash to benefit the Grand Strand Humane Society, 80-meter high heel run to benefit the GSHS, and a 13.1-mile marathon.
