South Carolina Highway Patrol plays ball

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol took a day off from the roads to play a little softball.

It was all part of a charity softball tournament, held each year to benefit the Special Olympics.  This year troopers from all over the state met up at the Freedom Florence Recreation Center in Florence.

State troopers say it's a great way to have some fun, compete and of course help out a good cause.

"I've seen them race, I've seen competitions, I've seen them win their gold medals," said Bryan McDougald with the SC Highway Patrol. "That's what got me hooked."

There was also a ceremony at the tournament to present the Special Olympic athletes that will benefit from the money raised.
