Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Stormwater Department is helping to bring a unique rain garden project to Carolina Forest Elementary School, marking the ninth of its kind to be introduced into school curriculum in the county.
A campus rain garden will be installed at Carolina Forest Elementary on May 19 at 9:30 a.m., with help from a $4,000 grant from Wal-Mart in Carolina Forest. The project will allow students to plant native, coastal South Carolina plants and spread mulch throughout the garden located in the front of the school.
"The rain garden is a type of 'stormwater best management practice' designed to collect runoff from impervious surfaces," said Horry County Schools spokeswoman Teal Britton.
The project is funded through regional Wal-Mart stores in conjunction with the Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium.
