Students, teachers honor Florence One mentors and tutors

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Students and school administrators will be honoring Florence One volunteers who have served as mentors or tutors to students in the Pee Dee school district on Tuesday.

The Mentor Appreciation spaghetti supper will be held on Tuesday, May 11, at 6:00 p.m. at Williams Middle School. Mentors and tutors will hear personal testimonials from students who will speak about the impact that the volunteers have had on their lives during this past school year.

Organizers say Florence One's pool of mentors and tutors has increased from 15 individuals since Summer 2007 to more than 200 trained mentors and tutors in 2010.

"Every child needs a mentor," said Interim Superintendent Dr. Allie E. Brooks, Jr.

Since its inception, Brooks has served as the volunteer coordinator of the Faith Based Mentoring program which trains interested persons to tutor or mentor students.   Brooks was also recognized as an outstanding volunteer by the South Carolina State Board of Education for his work with the program.
