Carolina Forest, SC - MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Saturday is Stamp Out Hunger Day across the U.S. and there is an easy way for residents of the Grand Strand to give a helping hand.
Chances are you received a card in the mail reminding you that mail carriers will pick up any non-perishable food items left in mailboxes and donate them to local food banks.
With unemployment growing into the double digits in South Carolina, there is a great need for food donations. The food banks have been counting on this event for some time.
"We've been doing this for about ten years and it's a nationwide thing, not just a local thing," says Tommy Grammen with the USPS. "And it's not just me, it is all my brothers and sisters out there working on this for a good cause."
Last year's collection brought in over 73 million pounds of much needed food across the county and this year they plan to hit one billion pounds.
