Second teen arrested in 73-year-old's beating, car jacking

Loris, SC -

LORIS, SC (WMBF) - Police in Loris have arrested a 17-year-old in connection to the beating of a 73-year-old woman outside of Loris Hospital last week.

Chief Joseph Vaught of the Loris Police Department said officers were dispatched to Loris Hospital after the woman's daughter found her lying in the parking lot around 9 p.m. Police believe the woman was struck and beaten by one of the suspects before reaching her car.

The 73-year-old from Loris, whose identity has not been released, was visiting her husband who was receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

Vaught reported in addition to the assault, the woman's 2000 Chevrolet Monticarlo was stolen by the suspects.

Police said 17-year-old Travis Jones, of Loris, turned himself into authorities on Monday. Jones is being charged as an adult for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, in addition to strong armed robbery. He has since been transported to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

A second male juvenile was taken into custody shortly after the incident. He has also been pressed with the same charges and is in custody at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
