FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Budding NASCAR star Joey Logano says a ride with a legend was not just an incredible experience, but one he hopes to turn into success in Darlington.
Logano was at a Florence Home Depot signing autographs before this weekend's races at Darlington Raceway. Home Depot is Logano's main Sprint Cup sponsor.
Last year, then-rookie Logano got to turn a few laps at The Lady in Black with NASCAR legend Cale Yarborough, an experience he still counts as one of the highlights of his young career.
"That was one of the coolest thing I've ever done is ride around Darlington with Cale Yarborough," said Logano. "He's the man here at Darlington, he's won a ton of races here. Not many people can say they've actually done that."
Logano also made sure to take some notes on what Yarborough told him.
"I'm riding around, like, 'This is the coolest thing I've ever seen,'" said Logano. "But then I'm like, 'I have to pay attention and see what he's doing here.'"
The advice may have paid off: Logano led quite a few laps and finished ninth at last year's Southern 500. He's hoping to top that impressive result in Saturday night's Showtime Southern 500.
"I feel like we've improved a lot as a team, I feel like as a driver I've improved a lot since then," said Logano. "I feel like our cars have gotten better, so hopefully when we get on the track it's going to be pretty good."
