Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (WMBF) - More than 69,000 young readers across the nation have participated in the 2010 Letters About Literature writing contest, and officials have announced Thursday a South Carolina student is taking hope top honors for her age group.
Sydney Hodgin, a student at West-Oak Middle School in Westminster, SC, was awarded 1st place for her essay among fourth to sixth grade participants. Hodgin's letter continued onto national judging and received a Letters About Literature National Honor award.
Contest officials say Hodgin is one of four National Honors recipients who are designating a $1,000 Target grant to a library of their choice.
"I decided to give the money to my school because teachers there are helping me become an outstanding student and citizen," Hodgin said after receiving the award.
Hodgin will be recognized along with 8 other South Carolina Letters About Literature Award Winners at an award ceremony held Friday at 11 a.m. in the State Library's administrative building in Columbia.
