WILLIAMBSURG COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A U.S. District Court judge has accepted the guilty plea of a 46-year-old woman who confessed to helping others prepare false tax returns.
Jerlene E. McKnight, of Salters, SC, entered the guilty plea on Thursday after admitting she prepared false W-2 forms and sold them to people who could file tax returns and receive refunds. According to investigators, the W-2 forms were in the name of two non-existent businesses.
A number of people with the false returns took the paperwork to Vincenia Brockington, a tax preparer who has been convicted of tax fraud.
McKnight admitted to selling at least 35 false W-2 forms to justify tax refunds, resulting in a national loss of $130,000.
The maximum penalty McKnight faces is a $100,000 fine and three years in jail. She will also be ordered by the courts to pay restitution.
