Group gathers to honor officers killed in the line of duty

Conway, SC - CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – The Coastal Carolina Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police held its annual memorial service Tuesday to honor those officers killed over the past year.

The event was held at the Horry County Government and Justice Building in Conway, where people gathered to remember those lost in the line of duty.  South Carolina police officers said 126 officers were killed across the nation in 2009.

Among the people paying their respect was a group of bicyclists who are cycling to Washington, D.C. in honor of all officers killed.

"We're not only honoring those who died in the line of duty, as we speak, but also those officers from years and years back.  Today we honored an officer that was killed in the 1940s at Myrtle Beach," said Jim Konrad with the Law Enforcement United Bicycle Riders.

The cyclists started in Florida and are expected to arrive in the Capitol City on May 12.
