DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - A family who had their home destroyed in a tornado last Sunday say they're overwhelmed by the community's response to lend a helping hand.
Johnny and Marie Melton have spent the last week trying to clean up the remains of their destroyed house and barns, and now are attempting to find a place they can temporarily call home. The Meltons spent the day Monday trying to find a temporary home to park on their land so they can continue to tend to their animals.
They say the community has been extremely supportive as they try to piece back together their lives.
"Donations and time - it's unbelievable," said Johnny Melton. "They've been a lot of help to us."
He said his co-workers at Progress Energy have raised thousands of dollars to help rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, while the Meltons had insurance policies in place, it won't cover all of their losses.
"This kind of help is just unbelievable. We need it, we appreciate it and I can't thank everybody enough," Johnny Melton said. "We have needed them desperately and they were here. We couldn't have scratched the surface of this clean-up operation without our friends, volunteers and people I didn't even know."
