Rex predicts nearly 4,000 job losses

Columbia, SC -

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - The head of South Carolina's public schools says he expects nearly 4,000 education workers to lose their jobs by the upcoming school year.

State schools Superintendent Jim Rex said Monday he thinks 3,800 education employees will lose their jobs, including about 2,500 teachers.

Rex's numbers are based on a survey of the state's 85 school districts. Local school boards are currently writing their budgets for the coming school year. District officials are basing their plans on the state budget, which the Senate approved last week.

South Carolina has about 50,000 teachers.

There are 1,400 fewer teachers this school year compared with last year. Job losses are expected to be even worse in the coming school year and class sizes are projected to rise.
