EASTOVER, SC (WIS) - One soldier died and one is injured Sunday after their helicopter crashed at McEntire Joint National Guard Base near Columbia.
Richland County EMTs and Columbia firefighters were called to the base around 2:45pm. Base spokesman Les Carroll said an AH-64 Apache helicopter carrying the two soldiers was participating in a routine drill when it crashed on a ramp.
The two soldiers were airlifted to the hospital, where the Richland County Coroner confirms one of them died. Neither soldier has been identified yet.
It's unclear whether the helicopter was landing or taking off at the time of the crash. Brig. Gen. Les Eisner, Deputy Adjutant General of South Carolina, said the National Guard is investigating the incident.
McEntire is home to the 169th Fighter Wing, which is deploying overseas this week. Carroll said the two injured passengers are not part of the deploying group. The helicopter belonged to the 151st Aviation Battalion, according to Carroll.
