Garden City church is one step closer to building campaign goal

Garden City, SC - GARDEN CITY, SC (WMBF) – St. Michael's Catholic Church in Garden City is about $2 million short of their new building fund campaign goal.

Father Andrew Trapp, also known as the "Poker Playing Priest," hoped to add $1 million to that fund by competing in a televised poker tournament.  He didn't walk away with $1 million prize, but he did receive a nice pay day.

"I pledged that whatever I won I would give to the church for our new church fund," Trapp said. "So thankfully, the program was able to send whole $100,000 straight to the church tax free and everything. We're able to put a big dent knocked into our church fund."

The church is now selling bricks and pews to memorialize to reach their $6.5 million goal. Officials at the church say they have already raised more than $4 million.

The new facility will be able to hold more than 12,000 people.
