Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A carnival could soon be setting up shop at the Myrtle Beach Mall if area leaders approve the rezoning requirements needed to abide by county regulations.
Officials with the Myrtle Beach Mall say they'd like to host the three-month carnival from May until August in a section of the facility's parking lot; however, the land on which the carnival would sit must be rezoned to meet county requirements.
County leaders say a request for a special events permit would not apply to the carnival because it is not an event seven days in length, or shorter.
An ordinance proposed to the Horry County Council reads a shopping mall must be present with paved parking, in addition to a minimum of 50 acres of land on highway commercial zoned property, to hold a special event lasting longer than a week.
The Horry County Council has passed a first reading of the ordinance. The Horry County Planning Commission recommended council pass the text amendment by a 7-1 vote Thursday night.
