OK, I'm not a cigarette smoker so I'm a little perplexed about today's subject. And since I am not an expert on the topic, I thought I would frame today's commentary in the form of a question for our viewers who happen to smoke cigarettes.
So Consider This question: Why do so many cigarette smokers think it is OK to toss their lit cigarette out of their car window, on the ground as they walk into a building or leave a pile of butts… cigarette butts, that is… in the sand on the beach? And while we're on the lit cigarette thing, you do know wildfires occur in this area? I'm just sayin'…
Really, I just don't understand the mentality. Isn't this littering, which is illegal? Plus, it's not like they quickly dissolve and disappear. It takes years for them to decompose.
So cigarette smokers: Please send me an email or letter and let me know the answer to this question. I'm serious, I just don't get it. Why do you think that is OK? Because it's not okay. Would you toss out a bag of trash from your car window or drop it on the ground, step on it, and then walk into a building? I would hope not, but there's no difference in throwing down a cigarette butt, especially when hundreds of people do it in the same location. It's nasty, it makes our area look terrible and it is also bad for the environment.
Please, get your butts off the beach and off the street. Better yet, put your butts in the trash can where they belong.
