Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology has been awarded a $2,000 grant to begin building and deploying an artificial reef that will eventually be placed in the Atlantic Ocean, according to school officials.
Amy Bennett, coordinator for the Champions of the Environment grant, says the student-made reef will help create habitat and assist with wave attenuation. The project has been designed to teach students about aquatic environments and the properties of wave dynamics.
Students will begin building reef models for inside of an aquarium before deploying a larger model in a pond on school property. Final ocean deployment of the full-sized artificial reef is planned for September.
The Champions of the Environment grant was awarded by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. The program supports environmental action by South Carolina's kindergarten through 12th grade students.
