COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - State senators could find themselves in a lengthy debate about abortion coverage for rape and incest victims in the state's health insurance plan.
Wednesday's debate on the $5 billion spending plan could bog down on the same issue that kept the House in a rare overnight session in March. The House spending plan said the state would only pay for abortions in the health plan if the mother's health was jeopardized.
The Senate Finance Committee rejected the plan and said coverage would be available in all three circumstances.
The Senate on Tuesday gave the proposed budget approval on second reading and delayed until Wednesday debate on most of the amendments senators had offered.
