Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County is beginning preparations to battle mosquitoes this summer by spraying in Galivants Ferry.
Spraying will be conducted in the evenings, according to Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier, usually between 7 p.m. and dusk, and ground operations between 7 and 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Although the chemical used for spraying, Malathion, is common and poses little risk to humans or animals, officials recommend that residents bring children and pets indoors and windows and doors be closed during spraying, Bourcier said.
In addition, homegrown fruits and vegetables should be washed, scrubbed, and/or peeled before eating.
To help keep the area's honeybee population safe, beekeepers are urged to contact Horry County Mosquito & Spraying to identify the location of their colonies.
Citizens with concerns, complaints, or those requesting spraying in their area can also contact Horry County Mosquito & Spraying at 843-915-5174.
