RADFORD, VA – No. 3 Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team fell to No. 2 Winthrop, 4-3, in the semifinals of the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Championships on Friday evening at the RU Tennis Courts/Burrows Burelson Tennis Center.
With the match tied 3-3, Winthrop's Nadav Ruppin edged Dimitry Vlaskin in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to clinch a spot in tomorrow's Championship rematch.
Due to rain, the decisive singles contest was delayed for 1 hour and 20 minutes before being completed at Virginia Tech's indoor facility.
The second singles match was 5-2 (15-15) in the third set when play was halted.
After the Chanticleers' top duo of Matt Gordon and Peter Billingham recorded an impressive 8-2 decision in the doubles competition, Winthrop responded with tiebreaker wins from Liran Levy and Dejon Bivens, 9-8 (5), and Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi, 9-8 (1), at positions three and two, respectively.
In singles play, Alex Funkhouser put the first point on the board for the Chanticleers with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 position. Shortly after, Matt Gordon gave Coastal Carolina (13-8) its first lead with a straight-set win (7-6 (5), 6-4) on court one, giving the Chants their first lead of the day, 2-1.
The Eagles' Liran Levy responded with a straight-set decision of his own (6-4, 6-4) over Plamen Tzvetkov to even the match, 2-2.
Coastal Carolina's final singles victory came from Dorian Sovic in No. 6 singles 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while Winthrop also got a singles decision from Guy Kubi, over Peter Billingham 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.
