Autopsy results released for recovered Waccamaw boater

Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County deputy coroner Tony Hendrick said Sunday morning that preliminary autopsy results point to David Leon Johnson Jr's cause of death to asphyxiation after his body was found in the Waccamaw River Saturday morning.

Investigators with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources ended their search for a missing boater on the Waccamaw River Saturday, after recovering the body of the 34 year old Conway man.

Divers with the Department of Natural Resources and Horry County Fire Rescue were dispatched to an area of water near the Old Reaves Ferry Landing early Friday evening following reports of a distressed boat. Witnesses say the small boat was taking on water.

Officials say one person on the boat was able to make it safely to shore, but another was unaccounted for.

Robert McCullough, spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources, says divers recovered the body of the missing man around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, just 30 yards from the boat.
