School district to recognize achievements of teachers, staff at ceremony

Florence, SC - FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - As students and teachers prepare to wind down the 2009-2010 school year, officials in Florence School District One are getting ready to host its annual end-of-the-year celebration.

The 7th annual Honors and Awards Recognition Program will take place May 4 at 6:30 p.m. on the Florence Darlington Technical College campus, according to district officials. The event will help top district leaders recognize teachers of the year, the district's National Board Certified teachers, conference presenters, advisers of state award-winning students, outstanding school and district achievements and grant recipients.

"Everyone is aware that this budget year is a tight one for schools," said district spokeswoman Pam Little-McDaniel. "However, the CEOs of our local corporations are aware that is important to thank teachers for going above and beyond the call of duty to promote excellence in our schools. When we knocked on their doors for a contribution for this event, they gave generously."

Little-McDaniel said this end-of-year celebration will also recognize everyone from teachers who have written grants totaling more than $615,000 to employees like Florence school bus driver Jack Wilkes, who will represent the state in the National Pupil Transportation Rodeo competition this summer.

Officials are also expected to honor athletic advisers whose students have made athletic commitments.

The speaker for the Honors and Awards Recognition Program is Bryan Coburn, the 2010 South Carolina Teacher of the Year.
