CARVERS BAY, SC (WMBF) – Carlton Geathers' life changed when he got a recent phone call from South Carolina head basketball coach Darrin Horn.

"He just said that he wants me, that I have a lot of potential," said Geathers.  "I'm very excited to become a Gamecock."

South Carolina offered the nearly 7-foot tall Carvers Bay High School star a scholarship.  Not long after, Geathers took a visit to Columbia and committed to play basketball for USC.

Carvers Bay held a signing ceremony for Geathers on Thursday.  Also signing were Angelo Brown, who will play basketball at USC-Salkehatchie and Josh Altman who will walk-on and play football at Charleston Southern.

Geathers comes from a long line of athletes, including cousin Clifton Geathers, who just wrapped up his career at USC playing football.  He helped sway Carlton to the Gamecocks.

"[Clifton] said I would love it there," said Geathers.  "Whether you're losing or winning, the fan base has got your back."

Geathers, who is nearly 7 feet tall and still growing, only started playing basketball about two years ago.

"Watching him come from this goofy kid all the way up to now, it's surreal," said Carvers Bay head coach Jeff Mezzatesta.

Geathers said he would be fine with redshirting next year, but still will try his best to compete for playing time.
