HARTSVILLE, SC - Senior Mason Ambler received the highest award given to a Coker College athlete, while freshmen James Sweeney and Jaclin Poole received the second highest honors at the 2010 Coker College Athletic Awards Ceremony held Wednesday night in Coker's Watson Theater.
Ambler was once again named the C.G. Timberlake Athlete of the Year Award, while Sweeney and Poole each received Freshman of the Year honors.
Ambler is a native of Atlanta and he has been a three year starter and team captain for the Cobra men's basketball team. A three-time Conference Carolinas All-Conference selection, Ambler was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II All-District Team in 2010. The Cobras leading scorer and rebounder for three consecutive years, Ambler averaged 17.7 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game in 2010, while ranking in the top ten in the conference in scoring and in the top five in rebounding.
Of the court Ambler is a very active member of the Coker community. A Business Administration major, he has interned at Sonoco Products, is president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is president of the senior class. He is also a Coker College Ambassador, a Dixie Youth umpire and a mentor at Thornwell Elementary. After graduation, Ambler plans to try his hand at professional basketball overseas.
Sweeney is a native of Huntingtown, Md. and is a member of the Coker men's soccer team. He was the Cobras starting goalkeeper for 19 of 20 games during the 2009-10 season, recording a record nine shutout victories, while leading the Coker men to their first ever Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship. He was ranked No. 25 in the nation in goals against average (0.82), was in the top 100 in the nation in save percentage (.765) and was in the top 5% of freshman goalkeepers in the nation. Along with his athletic prowess, Sweeney has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the Coker SAAC Committee and the Presidential Advisory Committee.
Poole is a native of Clover, S.C. and is a member of the Lady Cobras softball team. A utility fielder for the Lady Cobras, Poole played in all 40 games in 2010, playing short stop, centerfield, first base and catcher. She was the team leader in doubles (8), second on the team in RBIs (17) and second on the team in home runs (4). She was also Coker's second leading hitter with a .341 batting average, while also holding one of the highest fielding percentages on the team (.942).
