Big South Conference awards top men's tennis honors

Charlotte, NC -

From the Big South Conference:

CHARLOTTE, NC – Charleston Southern's Olga Makhova earned her second-straight Big South Conference Player of the Year honor, while Buccaneer head coach Mike Baker was tabbed the League's Coach of the Year by the League's head coaches, it was announced Wednesday at the awards ceremony held on the campus of Radford University.

Gardner-Webb's Erica White and Yasmine Alkema were honored as the Co-Freshmen of the Year, while the League's sports information directors voted Liberty's Jordan Jenkins as the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Makhova, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, posted her second-straight undefeated season in the Big South Conference and finished the year with an 18-1 overall record at the No. 1 position.  During her undefeated run in the Conference, she dropped only two sets during the year.

With her partner Marija Dzakovic, the duo posted a 4-3 conference record at the No. 2 doubles flight.  Makhova was the unanimous pick for the honor garnering all eight first-place votes and finishing with 12 points in the voting.

Under Baker's guidance the Buccaneers posted a school record 16 wins on the year.  The Bucs also claimed the school's second Big South Regular-Season Championship, the first since 1998.  Charleston Southern heads into Big South Women's Tennis Championships as the No. 1 seed, becoming the first team not named Winthrop to earn the top seed since 2002.

Baker picked up six top votes to finish with 19 points in the poll.

White, a No. 1 player from Charleston, W. Va., finished the year with an 18-5 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the Big South Conference.  She was named the League's Freshman of the Week three times on the year and highlighted her Conference season with a big win over Alkema of Winthrop.

Alkema, a No. 2 player from Algiers, Algeria, posted wins over four players from ranked teams on the year.  She finished the year with an overall mark of 11-10 and a 4-3 record in the League.  She was tabbed the Big South's Freshman of the Week twice this season and picked up Player of the Week honors once.

The 2010 Big South Women's Tennis Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting begins April 22 and concludes on Saturday at the Dedmon Center Courts on the Campus of Radford Univeristy.
