Washington - WASHINGTON, DC (WMBF) - South Carolina's governor has been named one of the nation's 11 most incompetent and unethical governors, according to a report from the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
The self-described "non-profit legal watchdog group dedicated to holding public officials accountable for their actions" released the report Wednesday that names those governors "who have pushed their states' best interests aside in favor of their supporters, families, political parties and bank accounts."
According to a press release from CREW, the group reviewed the job performances of all 50 U.S. governors.
CREW's report cited Sanford for abusing his office for personal benefit and the benefit of his friends, violating campaign finance laws by failing to report in-kind contributions and improperly converting campaign funds for personal use, subordinating his responsibilities to his pursuit of an extramarital affair and endangered his state's economy by threatening to refuse stimulus funds.
Sanford's office responded to the report Wednesday evening, pointing out "an interesting correlation in that a liberal front group goes out and hand-picks several conservative Southern governors for the so-called non-partisan hit list."
"It appears that [Governor] Sanford is in good company - from Gov. Perry who is on his way to winning his third term in office and Gov. Barbour who's contemplating a presidential bid, to highly touted reformer Gov. Jindal in Louisiana and Gov. Perdue in Georgia," said Ben Fox, Sanford's spokesman.
CREW's unranked list of the 11 worst governors includes:
- Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS)
- Gov. Donald Carcieri (R-RI)
- Gov. Jim Gibbons (R-NV)
- Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA)
- Gov. David Paterson (D-NY)
- Gov. Sonny Perdue (R-GA)
- Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX)
- Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM)
- Gov. Mike Rounds (R-SD)
- Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC)
- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA)
