Legislators to discuss trash to power legislation

Columbia, SC - COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - Legislators plan to discuss changing a South Carolina law to allow a proposed garbage incinerator that will generate power.

A Senate Medical Affairs subcommittee is scheduled to discuss on Wednesday changing the state's waste management law to include waste-to-energy facilities.

New Jersey-based Covanta Energy Corp. wants to build an incinerator in Chester County.

The proposal calls for incinerating garbage that would otherwise be put in landfills and use the heat to generate power.
