Dillon, SC - DILLON, SC (WMBF) - A Latta woman has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to scalding her 5-year-old stepson.

Dartisha Henson, 24, had been charged with cruelty to children for the 2008 scalding of the boy in a bathtub. Henson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and battery and inflicting great injury.

Circuit Judge Paul Burch also ordered Henson to register on a national child abuse registry.

The boy's father said when he came home he heard his son crying and noticed the burns and took him to a hospital in Marion. The boy was transferred to the burn center in Augusta, GA.

The boy's mother, Patricia Wiggins, says her son is recovering, but still requires monthly treatments at a Charleston hospital.

Detectives began investigating the child abuse case on Nov. 7, 2008, after they said the child suffered second degree burns. Through the investigation, officials said this was a way for Henson to punish him after he had wet the bed.

Authorities also arrested the boy's father Billy Avant and charged him as an accessory after the fact.

Avant was not at home at the time of the punishment, but said investigators had reason to charge him in the crime, as well.
