MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - More than 130 top handball athletes will compete in Myrtle Beach at the USA Team Handball Collegiate National Championships Friday through Sunday.
Athletes from across the U.S. from men's and women's teams will be at the competition, which runs from 2-7:30 p.m. Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the parking lot behind Hard Rock Café at Broadway at the Beach.
Spectators may watch the matches free of charge.
Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes will present gold medals to the champions at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Handball, an Olympic sport, is seven-on-seven team competition that takes place on an elongated basketball court. Teams will compete outdoors on temporary courts at Broadway at the Beach. SnapSports, the official floor of USA Team Handball, will provide two courts.
Two teams, composed of six players and one goalie each, face off. Athletes use their hands to dribble, pass and shoot a ball into a goal. Defensive play allows full body contact with unlimited fouls to prevent the offense from shooting.
A regulation game is played in two 30-minute halves with one team timeout per half. The clock stops only for team timeouts and injuries and at the referee's discretion.
