Georgetown, SC - GEORGETOWN, SC (WMBF) - The American Red Cross and the HealthPoint Center for Health and Fitness are hosting an evening water safety class.
The class is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday.
HealthPoint and the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross first teamed up to provide a similar program last year following a Feb. 18 boating accident that led to the drowning death of three Sandy Island residents. Sandy Island is accessible only by boat.
The two agencies hope to make the free water safety training available annually to help educate residents about water safety and the importance of learning to swim.
The program will consist of classroom lectures and in-pool safety techniques, covering topics such as risks of drowning, general water safety, how to properly wear a life jacket, rescue breathing/CPR and emergency action steps.
The class is intended for people ages 9 and older. Registration is free, but class space is limited to 40 people and all participants should bring a bathing suit. To register, call the Red Cross at 477-0020 or 546-5422.
