MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Members of Pee Dee Electric Cooperative may be eligible to receive a free solar thermal water heater or a power monitor as part of a statewide energy efficiency research study.
The goal of the study is to make co-op homes across South Carolina more energy efficient, reducing how much fossil fuel is used to generate electricity and postponing the need to build new power plants and to educate consumers about ways to save energy and money.
A limited number of participants will be selected to receive the solar thermal water heater system. Solar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water, accounting for up to 80 percent of your hot water needs.
Other participants will receive a power monitor and have access to their home's energy use for one full year either via an internet connection or from an in-home display. This near real-time information on the home's electric energy consumption can show how reducing energy use can translate into savings.
The deadline for applications has been extended to May 14, 2010. Online applications are available at PeeDeeElectric.com.
