Coastal Carolina softball falls 6-4 to Radford

CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University softball team could not hold off Radford's seventh-inning rally, falling 6-4 at the CCU Softball Field Sunday, April 18.  The Chanticleers fell to 20-24 overall and 2-7 in the Big South Conference while the Highlanders improved to 29-10 and 14-1 in the league.

Coastal tallied 11 hits with Sarah Maples, Michelle Evans, Stacy Snellings and Cacia Pierre each recording multiple hits, but fell short as Radford posted 13 hits, including four in the seventh inning, to win the game.  Both Nicole Beall and Hope Creasy went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Highlanders.

Radford took an early lead, sending a run across in the first frame.  Creasy earned the run batted in on a single through the left side, bringing Beall home, who had earlier singled up the middle.

The Chanticleers came back to tie the game 1-1 in the second.  Evans led off the inning with a single to center field and Brittany Bailey came in to pinch run.  Snellings laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Bailey and reached first on an error, putting runners on first and second. With one out, Pierre sent a long ball to the right center field fence, bringing Bailey home.

Coastal continued the streak, scoring two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead.  Maples singled to the shortstop with one out and Daigle cleared the bases with a dinger to left center field, her sixth home run of the season.

In the fourth, Radford cut the lead to one as Sarah Himan led off with a solo home run.

The Chants scored their final run of the game in the fifth.  Maples led off the inning with a single down the right field line and Daigle advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Evans followed with a hit up the middle and went to second on the throw home as the Highlanders tried to get Maples, but were unsuccessful, putting Coastal up 4-2.

Radford battled back, scoring one run in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead. With the game at 4-3 Coastal, RU's Beall led off the seventh with a double down the left field line and Himan drew a walk, putting runners at first and second.  After a fly out, Creasy doubled to right center field, sending Beall home to tie the game at 4-4.  Meredith Moore's sacrifice fly to left field brought Himan home and gave Radford a 5-4 advantage.  The final run came across the plate on a hit by Michelle Beal, driving Creasy home.

Coastal tried to battle back after two outs with Evans singling to the shortstop.  Snellings followed with a hit to left field, sending Evans to second, but both runners were left stranded as the Chants could not come up with a timely hit.

The Chanticleers step out of conference play Wednesday, April 21 to play South Carolina at 6 p.m. in Columbia, S.C.. Coastal will then return home for its final three-game home series prior to the Big South Championship, hosting Presbyterian.
