Horry County, SC - HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Horry County Police have one person in custody in connection to a Thursday night shooting in Carolina Forest.
Lt. Keith Strickland, spokesman for Horry County Police, says officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Canterbury Apartments in Carolina Forest around 6 p.m. Upon arrival, officers located a man with a gunshot wound.
Throughout the course of an investigation by the Horry County Police Department's Violent Crimes Section, police learned the man shot himself in the leg. The victim, identified as David Davis, 18, of Hemingway, told detectives that he pulled out a weapon because he thought he was going to be shot at. The gun discharged, striking him in the leg.
Sgt. Robert Kegler, spokesman for Horry County Police, says the investigation also revealed the Davis is on probation for a felony. According to law, it is illegal for the 18-year-old to possess a gun.
Davis was treated for his injuries at the Conway Medical Center and has since been taken into custody. He is residing at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on an unlawful carrying of a pistol charge.
