(NBC) - Counterfeit wine is threatening to take some fizz out of the industry.
Just last month, a dozen wine producers and traders were sentenced by a French court for mislabeling more than 4 million gallons of wine sold to several American companies.
A consumer can now log-in the number on the Internet to obtain a photo of the bubble tag on a specific bottle of wine. This system of authentication is called proof tag.
To date, 28 wine houses have bought into the technology, including Bordeaux chateau la tour, burgundy domaine des comtes lafon and napa valley hartwell estate, just to name a few.
